Select a geographical region for your search. You can select all 9 counties, select one or more of the 9 counties or a single county as the region for your search.

Within the region you have selected, you can narrow down your search by one of three methods: Quick Search, Keyword Search or Category Search.

Quick
Search:

Click on any of these icons and a search will be launched for

agencies that match the topic by Category.

Keyword
Search:

  • You can search for multiple keywords. Separate each keyword by a space.

  • For example:
    For example:
  • You can enter partial words for search.

  • For example:
  • You can search for multiple words in a phrase. Enclose each phrase in double quotes ". All words in the phrase will be considered together when the search is performed.

  • For example:
  • The search is performed on the Keywords and Organization Name fields of the Baha I&R Database.
  • You can elect to search either with the OR option or with the AND option. With the OR option, agencies that have a match with any of the entered words or phrases will be displayed. With the AND option, any agencies that have a match with all the entered words or phrases will be displayed.

  • In general, the AND option is used to narrow down the search and the OR option is used to widen the search.
  • Press the  button to launch the search after the desired keywords have been entered.
  • Press the  button at anytime to reset the form and clear all entered keywords.

Category
Search:

The structure of the services index and definitions of the terms used in this database were originally published in A Taxonomy of Human Services: A Conceptual Framework with Standardized Terminology and Definitions for the Field by the Information and Referral Federation of Los Angeles County, Inc., 3035 Tyler Ave., El Monte, CA 91731; Copyright (c) 1983, 1987, 1991. This Taxonomy is used for indexing community resources based on the services they provide and the Target Groups they serve. The current Taxonomy is jointly published by INFOLINE of Los Angeles and the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS), the national professional association of information and referral providers, and carries the endorsement of United Way of America.
  • You can select a Category to search by clicking on the Category's radio button. You can select up to ten Categories. Agencies or organizations indexed with any of the selected Categories will be retrieved. For example:

  • Food [7]

The [7] in the above indicates the number of Sub-Categories under the Food Category. See explanation of Sub-Categories below.

  • The number of Categories selected is shown on the screen, for example:

  • Categories / Target
    Groups Selected:

  • The name and description of the Category are shown on the left side bar of the form when the cursor is moved over the Category name displayed on the form, for example:

  • Category / Target
    Group Name and
    Description

  • Press the  button in this section to launch the search when the desired Categories and Target Groups have been selected.
  • Note that the search is performed with the selected Categories and all their sub-Categories. For example, in selecting the Food Category for search, all agencies indexed with the Food Category as well as those that have been indexed with any of the seven sub-Categories of Food will also be retrieved.
  • Press the  button at anytime to reset the form and clear all selected entries.

Single
Category
Search:

  • A search on a single Category can be launched by simply clicking on the name of the Category (shown in hyperlink format). For example:

  • Food [7]
  • Alternatively, the same search can be launched by selecting the Category's radio button and then pressing the  button.

Target
Group:

Some agencies and organizations have indexed their records with Target Groups they serve so that users could narrow their search by combining Cartegories with Target Groups. But the level of indexing with Target Groups among agencies and organizations in this database is not very consitent. Therefore,

It is recommended that the default All option be used to launch the search.

  • In case it is more desirable to select one or more Target Groups to narrow down the search, you first have to de-select the default All option by clicking on the check box. For example:

  • All

  • You can then select a Target Group by clicking on the Target Group's check box. You can select up to ten Target Groups. Agencies and organizations indexed with any of the selected Target Groups and any of the selected Categories will be retrieved. For example:

  • Age Groups

  • The number of Target Groups selected is shown on the screen, for example:

  • Categories / Target
    Groups Selected:

  • The name and description of the Target Group are shown on the left side bar of the form when the cursor is moved over the Target Group name displayed on the form, for example:

  • Category / Target
    Group Name and
    Description

  • Press the  button in this section to launch the search when the desired Categories and Target Groups have been selected.
  • Note that the search is performed with the selected Target Groups and all their sub-Groups. Agencies and organizations that have been indexed with any of the selected Categories and any of the selected Target Groups will be retrieved.
  • Press the  button at anytime to reset the form and clear all selected entries.

Sub-Categories:

  • Many of the Categories in the Taxonomy have Sub-Categories to provide a further refinement of the description of services provided by an agency. For example:

  • Food [7]

The [7] in the above indicates the number of Sub-Categories under the Food Category.

  • You can have the Sub-Categories shown on the screen by selecting any Category (as shown above) and then click on the button:

  • You can select multiple Categories and then click on the button to display their Sub-Categories. You can continue to do so until there are no more Sub-Categories (as shown with Categories without any trailing [ ]).
  • Since Categories have different number and level of Sub-Categories, you can reach the end of some Categories soon than others. You can select those bottom Categories together with other Categories that have further levels to go. Those bottom Categories will be carried forward to the next screen even though they have no Sub-Categories to display.
