VITA Sites
During tax season (early February - April 15), you can visit a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site and receive free help with your taxes.  VITA sites are designed to help individuals of low to moderate income, individuals with disabilities, non-English-speaking taxpayers, and the elderly.  The volunteers working at these sites are trained by the IRS and are able to prepare basic income tax returns.  VITA sites are typically located in community centers such as libraries, churches, shopping malls, and other public places.

The following is a list of VITA sites in San Francisco (last updated 2/17/99).  To find out where the VITA sites are in your area, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 during tax season.  You can also log onto the AARP web site and find out where other free tax assistance is offered in your area.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly
These sites also provide free tax assistance during tax season.  Although, as indicated by the name, these sites aim to help older individuals file their income tax return, most of them are willing to assist any low- to moderate- income workers, regardless of age.

Your Local Federal Building
The IRS provides free walk-in tax help during tax season.  Stop by and visit them at your local federal building.
